What are the Stages of Menopause?

Did you know there are not one, two but THREE stages of the menopausal transition?

If not, you are definitely not alone, we don’t get taught about this in school or even when we start experiencing this phase of life. I’m a firm believer in sharing more knowledge about women’s health so we can feel more confident navigating these experiences.

Let’s break down the 3 stages of menopause:

Perimenopause

The stage prior to your final period where hormones begin to shift as ovarian function declines. This phase can be experienced up to 10 (some sources suggest even 12 years before your final period). This stage is characterised by fluctuating hormones and is often where women will experience symptoms.

Menopause

Defined as 12 consecutive months with no menstrual cycle (period). This marks the transition into a new phase of life. Usually occurring between 45 and 55 years of age.

Post-menopause

Your body adjusts to it’s new hormonal equilibrium.

Entering perimenopause can feel daunting for many women, with the right support it doesn’t need to feel like this. At Santal Health we encourage collaborative care for women and believe that wellbeing should allow you to feel more joy and less restriction.
